Ingredients
2 packages (18 ounces each) calce mix, plus ingredients to
prepare mixes
5 cups Buttercream Frosting (recipe follows)
3 sugar cones
Blue and pink food coloring
4 sugar wafer cookies
2 stick pretzels
4 vanilla wafer cookies, cut in half
Assorted candies, striped gum and assorted dragées
Method
1. Prepare cake mix and bake in 4 (9-inch) square baking pans according to package directions. Cool in pans on wire racks 15 minutes. Remove from pans to wire racks; cool completely. Prepare 2 recipes Buttercream Frosting.
2. Cut 4-inch square out of center of three cake layers. Using squares and remaining cake layer, cut 3-inch triangle for door arch. Use 2-inch cookie or biscuit cutter to cut out 10 circles for towers.
3. Fill and frost first three layers; place on serving plate. Cut out doorway oi one side of cake; frost opening. Attach cake triangle over door with frosting to form arch. Stack cake circles at corners of castle to forni towers. Frost arch and towers. Attach sugar cones on top of frosted towers.
4.Tint ½ cup frosting blue. Pipe bricks1 windows and castle trim.Tint 1/ cup frosting pink. Pipe accents on door arch and at base of cone towers. Make drawbridge with
sugar wafers and pretzels. Place vanilla wafer halves around base of castle. Use assorted candies, striped gum and dragées to decorate castle as desired. Makes 24 servings
Ingredients of Buttercream Frosting:
6 cups powdered sugar, sifted
/4 cup butter or margarine, softened
¼ cup shortening
6 to 8 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
Method
Combine 3 cups powdered sugar, butter, shortening, 4 tablespoons milk and vanilla in large bowl.
Beat with electric mixer until smooth.
Add remaining powdered sugar; beat until light and fluffy, adding more milk, as needed for good spreading consistency. Makes 3 cups
